Are You Present? What Your Marriage Actually Needs From You

When's the last time you gave your partner your full, undivided attention? Not half-listening while scrolling. Not glancing up between notifications. All of it.

As a relationship coach in Fort McMurray, Alberta, I ask individuals some version of this question constantly — and the honest answer is usually "I don't remember."

A Fort McMurray relationship coach on why presence — not just time together — is what your marriage needs, plus a challenge to try tonight.

Technology Promises Connection. It Often Steals It Instead.

Our phones promise to keep us connected, but more often than not, they quietly pull our attention away from the people sitting right in front of us. The people closest to us — a spouse, a child — don't just need our physical presence in the room. They need our eyes. Our ears. The part of us that's actually there.

I see this constantly in relationship coaching sessions: relationships that aren't struggling because two people stopped caring about each other. They're struggling because two people stopped being present with each other. The phone goes down for a quick text, and somehow, it just never comes back up.

Presence Is a Skill — and It Can Be Rebuilt

Here's the good news: presence isn't a personality trait you either have or don't. It's a skill. Like any skill, it takes practice — and often, a little outside accountability to actually stick.

This is a large part of what relationship coaching is really about: rebuilding the habit of showing up for each other, not just occupying the same room at the same time.

Whether you're working through this as an individual trying to understand your own patterns, or as a couple wanting to reconnect, coaching creates a structured space to slow down, communicate honestly, and actually change the habit — not just talk about wanting to.

A Challenge Before You Keep Scrolling

Tonight, notice yourself in the moment. When you're with the people who matter most, are you actually there — or is part of you still somewhere else?

Don't judge it. Just notice it.

Awareness is where every real change starts. You can't rebuild a habit you haven't first noticed you're missing.
